Our Signature Crop: African Bird’s Eye Chilli

The African Bird’s Eye Chilli (Capsicum frutescens), also known locally as Piri Piri, is our flagship crop. This chilli is indigenous to Southern Africa and has been cultivated and consumed across the continent for generations. It is known for its small size, vibrant red color when mature, and sharp, intense heat. On the Scoville Heat Scale, Bird’s Eye Chillies typically range between 100,000 to 225,000 SHU, making them significantly hotter than common varieties such as jalapeños.

African Bird’s Eye — The Pepper

The African Bird’s Eye is a small, fiery chilli prized for its intense heat and fruity, citrusy aroma. Typically measuring 2–4 cm in length, these peppers pack a punch — averaging between 50,000 and 100,000 Scoville Heat Units depending on growing conditions.

Taste profile

Sharp initial citrus and green notes, followed by an immediate, clean heat that lingers without bitterness. Excellent fresh, dried or in infused oils and sauces.

Culinary uses

Perfect in marinades, peri-peri sauces, chutneys, hot oils and as a fresh garnish. Works beautifully with seafood, grilled meats and stews.

Growing notes

African Bird’s Eye prefers warm days and slightly cooler nights, rich, well-draining soil and consistent irrigation. We plant in sheltered rows, stake plants where necessary and harvest by hand to ensure top quality.

  •

Its adaptability makes the African Bird’s Eye Chilli ideal for sustainable farming in Eswatini’s climate. The crop thrives under the region’s warm temperatures and can grow robustly even in semi-arid conditions. This resilience also allows for consistent harvest cycles throughout the year, improving farming reliability for local agricultural communities.
